Edie trundled heavily up the stairs to her flat to see what mess the obscurum had kindly left for her. To her surprise it wasn’t as bad as she imagined, certainly not as awful as the store, with only a couple of drawers left open, her mother’s jewelry taken along with her grandmother’s brooch. That’s all the jewelry Edie had in her possession, that which had belonged to her mother and grandmother. She felt a sense of grief to know that all she had left of her mother was gone, but she wasn’t one to be overly sentimental of material things. What did bother her even more was that the bloody green book was completely untouched, still wrapped in thorny rose vines and sitting on the sofa. She was fairly certain she left that book under her sofa, out of harm’s way, but not surprisingly, it preferred to be seen.

‘And Jed mocked me when I said this book had a mind of its own,’ she muttered, kicking the book back under the sofa again.
